10 Reasons to Switch from Word to Drive

google-drive-logo_11My school is in the process of upgrading to Windows 8. Part of this transition involves removing computers that are not Windows 8 compliant. Altogether, we will be losing dozens of computers that will not be replaced as the cost of doing so would be astronomical. In the absence of these machines, there’s no question that a teacher’s ability to access traditional, standalone software such as Microsoft Word, will be diminished. I don’t view this as a loss, but rather an opportunity to shine the spotlight on Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), as well as an array of cloud-based technologies such as Google Drive. Google Drive can be accessed on just about any platform, making it a great place to begin the conversation. It’s an easy conversation to have when the advantages of using Drive are so clearly evident, especially when compared to Word. Here’s my top 10 reasons for switching from Word to Drive:

  • Work from any computer or mobile device that has internet access. This means that students can pick up from where they left off no matter their location. Students can also install the free Google Drive app on their mobile device and complete assignments, no need for a classroom computer. According to a recent report, 58% of Ontario schools are now reporting that students are using their own devices at school and this trend shows no sign of slowing. There are several boards in our province that not only allow students to use their own devices in the classroom, but encourage them to do so. 
  • Work collaboratively on the same document with any number of students, even if a student isn’t physically present in the classroom.
  • It’s very easy for students to share their work with teachers.
  • Everything saves automatically, there is no need to click a save button.
  • Significant paper reduction. Students can keep all their files in one place, and the teacher can access these files at any time, on any device.
  • Incredible tools are built into Google Drive that allow students to easily create amazing looking bibliographies, table of contents pages, and footnotes.
  • Flash drives/USB keys are no longer required.
  • No more excuses from students regarding missing files, or work left at home.
  • Teachers can leave feedback and comments right on a student’s document.
  • Great potential to create digital portfolios.
